Client Context & Business Objective

Client Background: A large volume of Gujarati legal information exists in documents that were created, scanned or stored in formats that are difficult to search, edit, reuse or process digitally. While the information is available visually, it does not always exist as structured Unicode text that modern digital systems can easily understand and work with.

Business Goals: The goal of Draft Unicode was to simplify the digitization of Gujarati legal documents by transforming document content into usable Unicode text. Rather than manually retyping Gujarati legal content, users needed a platform where documents could be uploaded, processed through OCR and converted into digital Gujarati Unicode content that could be searched, copied, edited and reused.

Project Objectives: Virtual Coders was engaged to design and engineer a document digitization platform combining Gujarati OCR processing, Unicode conversion, document management and a scalable SaaS architecture within a simple web-based workflow.

Challenge

Digitizing Gujarati legal documents presents challenges beyond conventional document scanning.

Legacy documents can contain different Gujarati fonts, layouts, scanning quality and formatting structures. Even when OCR can recognize document content, the resulting text needs to be transformed into usable Unicode while preserving enough structure for practical digital use.

The platform also needed to manage potentially long-running document-processing operations without making users wait on a single browser request.

The key challenge was therefore to create a workflow that could take users from:

Legal Document → OCR Processing → Gujarati Unicode → Digitally Usable Content

while keeping the experience simple for users.

Strategy & Engagement Approach

  • Document Workflow Analysis: Understand how Gujarati legal documents are uploaded, processed and converted into usable digital content.

  • OCR & Unicode Processing Architecture: Design a processing workflow capable of extracting Gujarati text and transforming recognized content into standardized Unicode output

  • Asynchronous Document Processing: Separate resource-intensive document processing from the user interface using background processing so users can submit documents without keeping the application request open.

  • Scalable SaaS Foundation: Build the surrounding product capabilities needed to operate Draft Unicode as a scalable digital platform, including authentication, storage, payments, administration and cloud infrastructure.

The Solution

Virtual Coders designed and engineered Draft Unicode as a web-based document digitization platform focused on transforming Gujarati legal documents into usable Unicode content. Users can upload documents through the application, which are securely stored and submitted to the document-processing workflow. OCR processing extracts Gujarati content from the source document, while background processing manages computational workloads independently from the user-facing application. The resulting Unicode content can then be presented digitally, providing a foundation for Gujarati legal information to become easier to search, copy, edit, archive and reuse. Beyond the OCR workflow, the platform includes the supporting capabilities required for a commercial digital product, including authentication, user management, payments, administration, content management and cloud-based document storage.

Digitizing Complex Documents at Scale?

Draft Unicode helps digitize Gujarati legal documents by converting document content into standardized Gujarati Unicode text that can be used within modern digital systems.

Unicode provides a standardized representation of Gujarati text, making digitized content easier to search, copy, edit, store, exchange and process across modern applications and devices

Users upload source documents to the platform, where they move through a document-processing workflow involving OCR, Gujarati text recognition and Unicode conversion before the processed content is made available digitally.

Draft Unicode is primarily designed around the digitization of Gujarati legal documents, including legacy and scanned document collections.

Document processing is separated from normal application requests using background processing, allowing resource-intensive OCR operations to run independently from the user-facing application.

The platform combines Next.js and React applications with an Express-based API, PostgreSQL, Prisma, background workers and AWS infrastructure, alongside authentication, communication and payment integrations
